In Hartford Performance, Latin Jazz Experience Bridges Cultures PDF Print E-mail

Cultures coalesced Friday at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford as David Gonzalez and the Latin Jazz Experience delighted a full house at the site of Connecticut's oldest synagogue on the first night of Hanukkah.

Hartford's Office of Cultural Affairs Pork Pie Hat 2009 Jazz Series closed with a glowing performance that took the chill off a frigid December night.

The octet delivered a tantalizing mixture of musical styles, most informed by Caribbean and South American traditions. The Experience's brand of Latin jazz included familiar tinges of R&B, rock and gospel sounds, all accented with layers of interlocking percussion instruments.

Gonzalez focused primarily on jazz standards during the first part of Friday's concert; after an intermission, the pianist turned his band's attention to his own compositions, with a sprinkling of Latin American classics like "Meliendo Café" and "Obsesion" added for good measure.

Although the Hartford native gave most of the solo space to his horn players, Gonzalez began many pieces with a brief unaccompanied spot on Yamaha Motif keyboard. Usually, he'd hint at the forthcoming melody, or establish a groove for his colleagues to follow.

As a leader, Gonzalez proved rather shy, only addressing the audience twice, even though it was clear from shouts and cheers that he had a lot of fans in the house. But his music more than made up for the pianist's reserved demeanor; his ecstatic facial expressions told the story whenever he was in the midst of a solo or musical interaction.

Gonzalez has assembled a strong ensemble, which includes several members who are themselves bandleaders. Most notably, trumpeter Ray Gonzalez (no relation to David) has led his own Latin jazz orchestra in Hartford for many years. Percussionist Miguel Rios and bassist Benny Velazquez, both integral contributors to the LJE sound, are also veterans of Ray's group, as is David. Ray switched to fluegelhorn for one of his most impassioned statements of the night during "Samba de Luis." He also offered a poignant a cappella introduction to "Obsesion," a popular Puerto Rican tune written by Pedro Flores.

Alto saxophonist Lummie Spann, another Hartfordite, took the lion's share of solos, along with flutist Ahmed Gonzalez (again, no relation to David). Spann, a product of Jackie McLean's Artists Collective and Hartt School jazz programs, is one of the region's most impressive post-bop improvisers. Like fellow reed man Antonio Hart (who was featured at a Pork Pie show earlier this season), Spann is an articulate player capable of shifting easily from straight-ahead jazz to Latin styles and back again, even within the same tune. He also sounded quite comfortable soloing in more contemporary, soulful settings like "Mia," a slow-burn funk tune written by the bandleader for his wife.

Flutist Gonzalez, a Puerto Rican native, often shared leads with Spann. His improvisations provided some of the evening's most exciting moments. Whether getting down during a reggaefied version of Horace Silver's "Song for My Father," or soaring on "Night in Tunisia," Dizzy Gillespie's bebop anthem, Ahmed delivered with creativity and conviction.

Abimael Robles gave the band its bold pulse from behind the drum kit. His hard-hitting grooves fired up the crowd, but sadly, his playing — in tandem with the other two percussionists — often threatened to drown out the horn players. The situation could probably have been resolved by the sound technicians, but the instruments were never adequately balanced.

Toward the end of the concert, Gonzalez invited several teenage musicians onstage to join the LJE in a sprawling, joyful ramble through Kenny Dorham's much-loved "Blue Bossa."

Poet Luis Enrique Mendez Angulo gave a short reading before the Latin Jazz Experience took the stage. He began with a poem written especially for this event called "On the Occasion of My Public Debut." The piece eloquently implored listeners to recognize the significance of art: "to uplift the spirit," in his words.
